Free Play
FREE PLAY is exploring without turn order: players act whenever they like while the GM runs the world.
- For everyone
How to use it
- The status bar shows FREE PLAY and the location.
- Players use MOVE, SEARCH, INTERACT, TALK, ITEM and OTHER at any time. There is no turn to wait for.
- The GM answers requests, moves NPCs, sends messages and reveals what is found.
Step by step
- Explore: move, search furniture, open doors, talk to people.
- Ask the GM for anything else with OTHER.
- When danger comes, the GM uses Start encounter or Roll initiative and the location switches to combat.
- After the fight, End combat returns it to Free Play.
Turn Order Without an Encounter For the GM
- The location card in Active Locations offers Add to turn order and Roll initiative when a scene needs turns but no prepared encounter, such as a chase.
- Different locations are independent: one can be in Free Play while another fights.
Important rules
- Free Play has no turn limits; movement is not counted per turn.
- The GM can request rolls in Free Play too.
Common questions
Why is there no ATTACK button?
